Sterling Audio

collapse expand iconDescription

Vocal reflections are some are sometimes harmonic, well-engineered reverberations that actually enhance and fill a vocal style, but most are not. Sterling’s VMS Vocal Microphone Shield adds greater clarity and isolation to your vocal tracks and improves your vocal sound quality for any recording, live or in the studio.

Reduce Vocal Reflections in an Untreated Room

The VMS features deep foam ribs that absorb high- and mid-frequency energy, while the perforations of the back shield diffuse low-frequency energy as it passes through, rather than reflecting back into the microphone. All you get is the full rich sound of your vocals recorded directly from the sound path.

Guitar Amplifier Isolation

Sterling’s VMS Vocal Microphone Shield is versatile. Remove the adjustable mounting bracket and set it up for close miking your favorite guitar amplifier. The large surface area with absorption and diffusion on three sides controls ambient space around the microphone, so you can get a clean, true isolation from your instrument without bleeding into the ambient room mics or any other channel that happens to be nearby.

Acoustic Guitar Isolation

Acoustic guitar is one of the more beautiful and challenging instruments to record. Sound reflections in the hollow body of the guitar get mixed in with the room’s own hard surface reverberations and can really mess up the mix. Sterling’s VMS creates an intimate sound field around the mic and delivers a cleaner, more articulated guitar track without adding the noise and feedback possible with hollow instrument recording.

Decent for its intended purpose

I purchased this item today at my local GC. Easy to assemble and attach to my mic stand as expected. It is very light which can be a plus. Good for hobbyists or beginners. I would recommend this if you already have a decent acoustically treated room to get a more "dry" sound. If you do not have an acoustically treated room I would recommend something a bit more professional such as the SE Reflexion Filter.

Does the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do.

I got this as part of a package deal with an ST-51 LDC for $99... I didn't need either one, but I like trying out cheap new microphones and figured it wouldn't hurt to have another reflection shield on hand. This thing is not a reflection shield- it is basically a reflection generator. It is a large resonant piece of metal that rings at about 6000/12000Hz- quite prominently, I might add. Perhaps there are some situations in which this thing might reduce reflections (recording in a parking garage? inside a reverb tank?), but in most practical application this device is more likely to introduce reflections into your recording than prevent them. The foam that coats the interior is neither thick enough to absorb any reflections, nor dense enough to mask the vibration of the "shield" itself. In a word, this thing is a GIMMICK, a quick cash grab by Guitar Center. This is NOT a functional product. Dampening the back side of this thing with loads of duct tape and filling the inside with another 4" of acoustic foam can turn this thing into a refection filter... but if that's your route, there are probably 2 dozen items at your local 99 cent store that could be similarly turned into reflection filters.

Should do great. A different brand I had seen seemed to have foam about 1-1/2 inch thick. This more like 1 inch foam - but the arc field is wider and seems a natural curve for absorption and cancelling room reflection.
