Zero latency overdub is great!

I bought this to collaborate with band mates when we couldn't meet up. After fighting pc audio latency issues, I bought this for the zero latency overdub feature. I love it! It can mount on a tripod. It has many recording options so it takes some time to learn, but a few minutes into the instructions and I was able to set it up for overdub. You can record a new track separately from the original and they are perfectly in sync when you import back to the pc. Lots of options for internal and external mics. I've tried a few things like external audio mic, recording a practice session with the internal mics, plugging guitar multi effects directly. All worked well. You have to check recording levels but there is a simple way to adjust sensitivity. The one negative is that you need to transfer audio files back and forth to the pc. But that's a small issue in exchange for all my overdubs having zero latency. For a versatile home studio recorder, this is pretty great. If you need to make professional quality recordings, maybe it's worth investing in more gear, but for the amateur who needs to make some recordings, this is a great device. Buy this over an audio interface.

Decent recorder - just don't update it.

It was great for the first two months. Loved everything about it. However, when I wanted to use this as an impromptu interface for guitar/vocals all was going well until I was done and ejected from the USB. It never turned on again. Batteries were fully charged, nothing changed. I contacted Tascam support and they weren't able to identify the problem. I went online updated the drivers and it now turned on with a new button press combination. But only once. Never turned on again. Had to return it today and I'm sad to see it go. So I think this is a great recorder for its portability and ease of use - just don't plug it in to use as an interface.

I bought this for quick live recording of band practice and couldn't be happier with it. The built in mics sound great and the wide stereo sound is amazing. I almost didn't buy this based on another review here that said the recording was distorted due to the band being loud. If you set your levels properly the sound is very clear.

  • Great for Field - Recording as well as 2 track from board!

The DR-40 is great for field recordings using the built in mics. You can also plug 2 external mics or 1/4" line in and record 4-tracks at once! Uses SDHC cards, get the Sandisk.

I bought this for recording practices. I record through the built-in mics and the sound board at the same time. It took a little while to learn my way around the functions, but it was not difficult to catch on, I just needed a little time. Recordings are better than I expected!

  • Not for live music if you're a rock band

Hoped to use this for a quick and simple rehearsal tool. At normal level the input was overdriven even with input gain down.

I really enjoyed using my DR40 until my headphones fell while plugged into it. Surface Mount circuits can be great designs but NOT FOR MOUNTING HARDWARE. A jack without thru-hole leads or adhesive provides very little shear strength (when a component is knocked off sideways.) When the headphone jack broke off, it ripped 2 traces from the PC Board. If you get a DR40, BUY INSURANCE FOR IT! You'll be glad you did.
