Description
TASCAM's Model 12 is an all-in-one mixer designed to support musicians, performers and content creators through every stage of the production process with an internal 12-track recorder, USB audio interface, DAW control and livestreaming capabilities in one portable unit.
12-Track Internal Recorder Captures Your Creativity
The Model 12's built-in 12-track recorder captures your ideas as high-quality WAV files (up to 24-bit/48kHz) directly to an SD card, with playback of up to 10 tracks simultaneously. Use the mixer's punch-in, punch-out and overdubbing functions to build layers, then import the WAV files into your DAW for further editing. The Model 12 puts a professional-grade multitrack recorder in the palm of your hand.
Seamless Computer Integration via USB
Connecting the Model 12 to your computer is effortless thanks to its onboard USB Type-C port. Use the mixer as a USB audio interface to playback and record into your DAW, with hands-on control of transport, faders, mutes, pans and more. The Model 12 supports HUI/MCU protocol emulation for control of most major DAWs like Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Ableton Live.
Perform and Produce with Built-In Effects
The Model 12 comes equipped with essential effects for live performance and recording, including a one-knob compressor, three-band EQ and high-quality reverb on each channel. Tweak your tone quickly using the mixer's tactile 60mm faders and one-touch navigation. The Model 12's effects and logical layout facilitate a seamless workflow, allowing you to focus on your creative process.
All the Connectivity You Need
Despite its compact size, the Model 12 offers plenty of inputs and outputs for a variety of applications. It features eight XLR mic inputs, 10 line inputs, a 3.5 mm smartphone input, Bluetooth 5.0 and MIDI in/out. Dual headphone outputs provide discrete monitoring mixes for performers and engineers. Flexible routing options like selectable PFL/AFL modes and solo in place give you full control over your signal flow. With pristine audio quality and a versatile feature set, the Model 12 is a mixer built for professionals.

Dream Machine. Perfect blend of old and new.
I'd already wanted one of these for a long time, to get off of my computer and focus on the actual music (instead of getting distracted by infinite plug-ins), but what sealed it for me was when I tried to do some "retro" recording straight to tape and it sounded awful. Nostalgic, yeah, but I'd forgotten why we all switched to digital in-home studios, if we couldn't afford high-end tape systems: Cassette tape recorders sssuuuuckk (well, "hiss", to be more accurate). The Model 12 makes it *feel* like an old school home recording session: quick, simple, fun - but it actually *sounds* great, too. And what's even better is that it's so wonderfully versatile. I can record anywhere, and it sounds great even with just the built-in preamps/compression/eq/effects. Or I can import the tracks into a DAW and edit them. Or I can record straight into a DAW with far more inputs than the two I've been limited to for years with my previous interface (I can finally record drums, with every mic on it's own track!) Or I can use it as a live mixer. Right now I'm setting it up to plug directly into a camera mic input, so I can record live video with the sound already mixed, instead of the nasty ambient audio from the camera's mic, and with no need to try to add/edit and sync up the audio recorded on a different device. I'm also setting it up to use it for potential live streams/podcasting. I'm just totally loving it. I feel like a teenager again, with a 4-track Portastudio and big dreams. It does take some how to videos and a lot of reading the manual to get started and dip into all of its capabilities, but it's worth the time and effort.

It's a cheap digital mixer, keep your expectations low
Full Review: Initial findings -Preamps are weak, especially channels 7-10 -Low headroom make it easy to distort, especially the aux sends, keep aux sends below noon. -Metering is useless, everything clips above +3 despite going up to +15 -Operating the pots quickly produces a digital zipper noise -Line/Inst switch does nothing noticeable -EQ is useless, swept mids are wildly inaccurate, 80 and 10k useless, HPF sounds like it's set to 250, not 100 -Can't access the outputs from the USB interface, they only route back to the inputs -Not a true 12 in/10 out interface. Only 8 in/2 out at most -PC app does nothing, no routing or loop back functionality -Faders drop all audio once they get below -30, audible bit reduction with no dithering, unusable for a nice fade out Tips for use as a USB interface: -Keep Ch 9/10 as your stereo output from DAW -Run 9/10 fader at -5 -Bypass all EQ -Enable the -10 pads on outputs -Keep Aux sends at noon, Aux master at 0 -Never go above zero on the meters -Use your DAW to set the sample rate to 24/48 Bottom line: I thought this might be a good centerpiece of my project studio, but the quality is just not there. You get what you pay for I guess. It looks pretty. I like the "wood" side panels. I'm using it to make sketches and demos now. Just turn it on and start recording, good way to document whatever I'm doing. If I want to make a real project out of one of these sketches, I'll have to rerecord it directly into the DAW with my UA interface.

Left channel of headphone 1 doesn't work, everything else works great. It does exactly what I want it to do. I am glad there is a 2nd headphone jack that works.

I am presently using my "old" TASCAM DP-01 Digital 8-Track for recording tracks, and then exporting my tracks to GarageBand for mixing. Would this unit negate the need to export and mix on my Mac? i.e., it is an all-in-one recording & mixing unit? Thanks.
Yes. Please give us a call if you would like some help 877 687 5403submitted4 years ago
