Taylor

collapse expand iconDescription

The Taylor 414ce Grand Auditorium acoustic-electric is a bridge between everyday musical utility and top-tier craftsmanship with a refined-rustic vibe that complements the tonal warmth and lush overtone response of the rosewood/spruce wood pairing. The Grand Auditorium body style makes for a versatile guitar that yields ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. A Sitka spruce top blends the right amount of stiffness and elasticity in proportions that translates into a broad dynamic range with crisp articulation. This is combined with an East Indian Rosewood body for a full-spectrum voice with complex overtones and a long sustain. Aside from its comfortable playability, the 414ce is also equipped with Expression System 2 electronics for clear, full tone in any venue. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The position of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured when plugged-in. Combined with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. Whether you plug into a PA, your favorite acoustic amplifier or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. If you want to adjust your sound, you can color it with easy-to-use volume and active bass and treble controls. The Taylor Expression System 2 is powered by a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment.

It can be tough to try and justify, quantify, defend, etc., whether higher end instruments are worth the higher price tag, but as an owner of a few 200 series Taylors over the years (which I've been nothing but happy with), picking up and playing a 414ce-R for the first time really was an eye opening experience...it's not a case of "better" to me as much as "more." More sustain, more low end, more clarity...5 minutes of playing, and it's simply clear what all solid wood gets you. The 400 series was refreshed in early 2023, and are the true entry point into your standard 'made in the US' all solid spruce top/solid indian rosewood back and sides lines, and don't disappoint. Like on all Taylors I've ever played, the 414's playability is 10/10. It has a bright, booming tone, with a bigger sounding low end than you might expect from a Grand Auditorium body. It's got a ton of sustain and played effortlessly with low action right off the wall. And of course the burst finish is spectacular and striking...I also have to say the mahogany neck and its satin finish feel even slightly more comfortable to me as well than my 200s. I simply want to pick this up and play it all the time... I can't recommend any more highly. Just an awesome guitar I love playing live, or just noodling at home.
