Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator - Aracade PO-20

collapse expand iconDescription

The Pocket Operator series is a fun and portable way to make electronic music, and the PO-28 is perfect for the fan of crazy bleeps and dings and other sounds you might find in a vintage arcade. It’s hard to describe a sound set, but picture this: it’s 1982 and a brand new magic video game cabinet has arrived at the local amusement arcade. Somehow the machine is stuck in sound debug mode. Now you’re getting the idea.

I really like the way it works and how it is very capacitive way to play music. On the downside, the commands can be difficult to understand.

The Pocket Operator series continues its legacy of solid builds for good prices with low learning curves and surprising sound quality. Big improvements in the PO 20 include solo modes to play melody, bass and beat separately. The new fill options are also a step up from the drills of the PO12. The trade off is that fx can't be saved in real time anymore. However, the hud has more useful information now even if it is still rather busy. While lack of midi is a bummer still, the Pocket Operators sync with other equipment easily and very effortlessly thanks to solid clocking. They can also clock out to cv-synchable gear. A grreat library of sounds with good filtering and also a hidde drone synth that sounds great when stuttered witheffects. Let's be honest - this thing makes video game music. But compared to the nanoloop or similar chiptune devices, the ease of use and quality sound on this far outweigh the tradeoffs.
