I will just go ahead and say it "I love my Black Mamba Djembe"! I bought this djembe on a whim, thinking that it might be fun to have around but I never imagined how much I would really enjoy it. I keep it in my studio and play along with tunes and occasionally bust out a djembe solo if so inspired. I am not a drummer and I don't think anyone necessarily needs to be a drummer to enjoy playing a djembe. Friends that I have let play it seem to take to it easily and within minutes are happily drumming away on it. Rope tuning seemed like it might be a difficult task but it is really easy and fun to do. I found a youtube video that demonstrated it perfectly and I had my djembe tuned up in about 15 minutes. It stays in tune very well and I have only had to tune it maybe three times in eighteen months of playing it. The sound is awesome, a very deep bass note and the tone and slap notes are perfect. Construction is top notch and it still looks and plays as new. I'm not sure what it would take to ever wear out a head but this one doesn't seem to show any wear after quite a bit of playing. Other instruments may come and go but I plan to always have Black Mamba around.

I purchased this one used from GC and it was listed as like new. I found the used drum to be in fine shape, but cannot get it tuned. The skin is stretched and will not tighten to my preference. As for the overall quality. The skin is listed as goat. It is so processed that I have a hard time believing it was once alive. The platic barrel is lightweight and well plastic. I hoped this drum would be a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to my high quality wood djembe. It is not. If you are used to quality, it is hard to make the adjustment. This one sounds tin-ny and hollow. May be fine to be heard at a large drum circle, but I wouldn't want to hear that pitch as a listener. I am returning it and will invest in a mid level wood djembe for travel and drum circles.
