OK, until it breaks.

I was told by ultimate that they don't manufacture the spare parts for this stand, so "ultimately," when the wonky folding apparatus on the bottom leg shears off because of its questionable design, you are left with an unusable and rather heavy hunk of expensive metal inside a cheap bag. I liked it fine before it broke, because it's one of the few stands out there that is tall enough for me. But the fact that I can't buy the part from them to repair plus changes to Ultimate's formerly great warranty policy has got me doubting that I'll ever buy anything from them again.

The stand arrived broken, with pieces of it scotch-taped to the bars by a previous owner. I bought it as a new, unused item. This item should never have been put back into circulation.

after 3 months it has literally fallen apart. all moving joints have become worn and loose. I bought this because I'm a touring musician and wanted to save space in the trailer but now i regret it, its become wonky and unstable. The legs are impossible to fold back up once out now. It does look cool and the idea is great but the design is not quite there yet. Now i need to purchase a different one because this it takes Ultimate 4 weeks to either fix or replace, Oh well, lesson learned. Ultimate makes great stuff but this one is not quite there yet. TRUST ME!

Ultimate Support makes some stout stands, so it should be no surprise that the VS-88B (nice name, don't you think?) is a beast, but what you cannot see from the picture is just how beastly it is. At its fullest extension it is about 48 inches high, and just under 28 inches wide at the top. That is an excellent height for standing if you are 6 foot 4, but your Little Phatty or your R3 will fall right on the floor. It will hold an Axiom 61 without modification, and the VS-88B really shines when you set a Keystation Pro 88 on top. Even with the heavy, weighted keybed bearing down on it, this stand doesn't complain, and the angled struts leave plenty of room for your knees and pedals. At the Liliputian end of the VS-88B's range, the height is 28 inches and the width 19 inches, so your Little Phatty is safe, but you'll have to kneel. Setup is really easy, involving the manipulation of a few hinges (with pins to lock them), and then sliding the main stantion tubes to the desired height (with an integral peg on a hasp to secure those at one of thirteen positions). The VS-88B is not light, and it flops all around if you don't hold it with both hands when it is folded, but Ultimate is nice enough to give you a heavy-duty nylon bag with a pad on the shoulder strap to keep it in check while you transport or store it. Like most stands with a tubular upper deck these days, the VS-88B comes with three rubber non-slip sleeves, and a fourth with a cam shape to it for adjusting out any flatness issues under your keyboard. The wide struts which form the base also have large rubber caps on the ends to provide stability and traction. You might want to leave it set up in the garage for a few days after you get it, though, because all that rubber smells like smoked meat something fierce when it is brand new. Then again, bacon isn't the worst thing your studio space could smell like.
