VOX Custom Series Head & Cabinet Overview – AC30CH, AC15CH & V212C

VOX

collapse expand iconDescription

For those who crave more power, the Vox AC30 expands on the captivating sound of its little brother by doubling the wattage. Employing a quartet of EL84 power tubes, the AC30 Custom pumps 30 watts of remarkable tone. Capable of both enchanting clean and raucous overdriven sounds, the signature chime of the AC30 Custom pairs seamlessly the intricacies of your playing style, resulting in a sound that is truly your own. Perhaps the most iconic amplifier in VOX’s pedigree, the AC30 earned its place in history as the amplifier that powered the British Invasion. Since then, the AC30 has remained the choice of the world’s most accomplished artists who have come to rely on its unique voice to amplify theirs.

Included in the AC30 Custom Head is VOX’s new Reactive Attenuator. This newly designed attenuator that uses VOX’s Reactor Technology optimizes the interaction of the speaker and amp at any volume. This allows the speaker and amp to behave in the same way at stage or bedroom levels, delivering a sense of power and tone that cannot be obtained from conventional attenuators.

I use it with a Celestion Greenback loaded Marshall Cab. The head is easier to handle that an AC30 combo and the cab is on casters.

Pros: Amazing amp with amazing tones and features. I really can't stress enough how great of a clean Vox does - better than any amps I've heard. The AC30 also has the effects loop I absolutely require (heavy handed reverbs and colored delay pedals don't sound good before the amp). The built in attenuator is amazing, letting you actually dirty it up at bedroom levels if you need to without any color. That being said, the clean input only comes to life with a blend of master and pre-amp volumes for tone, so you may need the attenuator to cut the volume back. It can be hard to test in stores, but just know that if you can find an AC15 combo, this really does sound and behave the same, it just also delivers on more levels - way louder if you need that, the attenuator, and the effects loop make it a straight upgrade. Cons: It's effectively a one-channel amp, unfortunately, so you need an A/B/Y pedal if you want to use the amp's clean AND the amp's dirty and even then, you only get one master volume. That means the pre-amp gain on the top-boost channel will be where you have to set your master volume, and then you may sacrifice some of the tonal choices with the normal channel in order to get an ideal volume balance when switching them. The amp's crunch actually sounds pretty nice, too, so it's kind of a trade off if you want a clean and crunchy amp. You have one of three options if you really need to do that, though - 1: You can A/B/Y the channels, since they are separate physical inputs on the amp. This still means your master controls both volumes, however, anyways, so your clean tone may suffer. 2: You can use the higher gain channel, but dial back on your guitar to get relative cleans by skirting on edge-of-breakup volumes, or 3: most practically, just buy a fuzz or overdrive that sounds good through a Vox, but how this amp handles drives gets a little messy, and you'll have to do some research, as any pedal you choose is going to have its faults amplified.

The low wattage power attenuator makes this amp great for apartments, bedroom volumes. Get THE SOUND without blowing the volume way up! The head version is also great because its not as heavy as the combo. Use the 2x12 vox cab, greenbacks,....or replace one or two with alnico blues or weber alnico.
