collapse expand iconDescription

As part of the VTX Series, the VOX Valvetronix VT20X is a perfect combination of innovation and tradition. These amps combine sophisticated modeling technology with a multi-stage tube preamp circuit to reproduce the unique distortion, touch sensitivity and response characteristic of classic tube amps. Its unique modeling algorithm actually recreates the analog circuits of some of the most coveted tube amplifiers and allows you to adjust the gain structure and bias of the internal tube in real time. Also, when using certain models, the amp can be switched between Class A and Class A/B operation.

The effects section has also been revamped and now offers 12 classic effects based on some of the most iconic stompboxes of all time. These amps also feature a USB port, which allows you to connect the amplifier to your PC, Mac or iOS device (with optional USB Camera Adapter Kit, sold separately) to manage programs and customize amps and effects by using VOX’s Tone Room software. The Tone Room software allows for deep editing of all of the great amps and effects so you can carefully craft your sound, which can then be saved as one of the eight customizable programs. There is also a built-in tuner, an AUX-in jack for jamming along with recorded music and a headphone jack for silent practice.

Perfect practice amp

I love that VOX tone. After a full day demoing practice amps at the local guitar center, I kept coming back to this little guy (The VT20X is a newer, improved version of the VT20+). The big things for me was getting a great amp for practicing at bedroom levels in my apartment. This can get quite loud, but still holds up an amazing sound at whisper quiet levels. That is what I wanted, the other amps I tried just couldn't cut it for the price range I was looking at (Marshall MG15CFX, Peavey VYPYR VIP, Line 6 Spider IV, Fender mustang / frontman). It takes pedals well. This has a single tube in it, and it really makes a difference in sound compared to other solid state practice amps. But you don't get the steep price tag that usually accompany tube amps. I love that you can change the bias settings to carve out a legit tone. The effects are okay, as they are there mostly to play with- anyone serious about effects would use their own pedalboard. I'm mostly using the modeled AC30 sound, the fender twin clean, or the tweed crunch sound - all sound amazing. But I'm disappointed in the sound when using headphones (mine are the Audiotechnica MTH-50), it seems that headphone circuit bypasses the power amp stage. It also doesn't take the usual power cord, it needs its own that comes with it. I gig with my VOX AC15, but I don't think I would use this on stage... maybe its big brother the 40x or 60x would be good.

It's okay, but I wouldn't buy again

I played this amp in the store many times, along with other modeling amps similar to it. I kept coming back to this one, and it eventually won me over. It worked and sounded perfect, but the one I bought was an entirely different monster. Mine has this issue where every time you switch models or channels, the sound has issues. The effects and settings all cut out, resulting in a bland sound, no matter what model you select. This issue is fixed by wiggling all of the knobs ever so slightly, and then the sound is correct for the setting. An easy fix, but very annoying to do every single time you adjust something or switch models. I was aware of this being a common issue, based on other reviews, and my friend having the exact same issue with this amp. I took my chances with this one and sure enough, mine has it too. It wasn't a deal breaker for me. I could deal with adjusting the knobs over and over. I only use this amp for practicing in my apartment via the headphone jack. This brings me to the next issue. I've had the amp for about two months, and the circular piece of plastic where the headphone jack goes completely broke off when I disconnected it one day. Not disconnected. I mean the plastic snapped off entirely and I've been unable to glue it back perfectly. This makes connecting headphones impossible now until it's fixed. I never yanked on it with force when I disconnected it. I also never accidentally stepped too far from it while playing, causing it to disconnect. Don't get me wrong. This is a very unique amp with tons of options, which is what sold me on it. It has great potential, but due to the build quality, I'd say it's not worth it, and if you're looking for an affordable modeling/bedroom amp, there are probably better options out there. I'm currently looking into the Boss Katana and Blackstar ID Core series.

I picked up a floor model with some obvious wear and no power supply at a deep discount. A few dollars on a power supply and a few days later, I was in business. Once I switched to presets mode and played with the bias and class, I got good, inspiring tones out of this amp quickly. The gainier and cleaner models alike have sweet spots but once you find them, its a solid sound. I was concerned both about an 8" speaker and a closed back, typically not a fan, but it worked out to a non-issue for me. The amp is not overly directional (you don't have to have it pointed straight at your head to get the best sound) and it is not muffled or boxy. I will say that it needs a reasonable amount of volume to sound good. I have other, bigger and smaller, amps that do have better sound at particularly low volumes. My first pass with the effects (to be fair before I brought the volume up more) found them to be hit and miss. Decent reverb, good delay, bad chorus, okay compressor. As others have commented, there is definitely a volume glitch. If you adjust the power level or change presets, it gooses or drops the volume to an unexpected degree. You just have to turn the volume away from and right back to where it was to get it corrected. I would be delighted to have this as a first amp. It beats probably the first 5 that I did have, not that long ago. For me now, it is a fun and enjoyable addition to the arsenal. Oh, and it does play/feel like a tube amp. Great response.

I was very excited when I bought this amp after trying at the store. A solid state amp with preamp tubes! When I got it home, I tried it out and that's when I started noticing problems. 1)Whenever I switched amp voices, either the sound totally cut out or the volume was crazy loud. 2) The effects would cut out and just leave you with the clean sound. I owned this amp for the total of about 3 hours before I took it back to GC and bought a Fender Mustang LT 25, which I love!

There is one con. I would've preferred a more "typical" power supply. That being said if you can find this amp on sale like I did at $189 at my local GC you'll get a great amp, nice package of sounds, and power enough for a small gig (The volume easily filled the GC store during a staff demonstration). I was originally going to get the Vox 10 practice amp, but this was more than twice that amp at less than twice the price, so the decision was easy. Easy to transport and store. Plus, of course, it has the "Vox" look which is a nice little extra.

The amp can get loud, however, for gigging we recommend using a mic on the amp.
