Description
Part of the VTX Series, the Valvetronix VT40X is a perfect combination of innovation and tradition. These amps combine sophisticated modeling technology with a multi-stage tube preamp circuit to reproduce the unique distortion, touch sensitivity and the response that is characteristic of classic tube amps. Its unique modeling algorithm actually recreates the analog circuits of some of the most coveted tube amplifiers and allows you to adjust the gain structure and bias of the internal tube in real time. Also, when using certain models, the amp can be switched between Class A and Class AB operation.
The effects section has also been revamped and now offers 12 classic effects based on some of the most iconic stompboxes of all time. These amps also feature a USB port, which allows you to connect the amplifier to your PC, Mac or iOS device (with optional USB Camera Adapter Kit, sold separately), and manage programs and customize amps and effects by using VOX’s Tone Room software. The Tone Room software allows for deep editing of all of the great amps and effects, so you can carefully craft your sound, which can then be saved as one of the eight customizable programs. There is also a built-in tuner, an AUX-in jack for jamming along with recorded music, and a headphone jack for silent practice.

A BEAST in a tiny package!
So, this little thing has it all. It has great amps and effects with great sound and the feel you need from an amp to have "playability" thanks to the tube and circuitry. Each of my guitars sounds different and feels different when I plug them in, not just the same 'ol processed digital sound like modeling amps used to have. The built-in tuner is great, and the headphone jack can be used as an out that I plug directly into my audiobox for GREAT sound for recording without having to mic an amp and get loud. Connecting to a PC for more amp and effects via the tone room is like adding a post-processing program in your recording software, but instead of post you get it pre for great sounds with zero latency issues. I really can't say how happy I am with this amp. I can turn it down low enough to not even need headphones in my apartment at 3am, yet I think it's got some nice volume if I end up sitting in with friends. For the money, if you're even considering this amp just quit and buy it already. Just don't see a way you'll be let down. Watch some videos online if you want to learn more and hear it, there are some good ones, and my experience backs up what I heard about it, and then some. My expectations are rarely exceeded, in this case they were by a lot!

Full disclosure: I am not a professional musician. But I have been playing guitar for 40+ years and have had several amps over that time. Given that history, I can confidently state that the Vox VT40X is the worst amp I have ever played (but that's likely only because I didn't try the 20X). I bought this monstrosity on a whim based on customer reviews. I was looking to replace my used and abused Fender Super Champ 2X with another hybrid amp and thought the VT40X would be a good choice. So wrong ... I must admit the ability to switch the preamp between acting as class A vs. class AB tube actually seems to work OK. Many comments have been posted about the low quality of the stock speaker, and this undoubtedly accounts somewhat for the poor quality sound this thing puts out. But the real problem seems to be on the solid state side of the amp: it just does a really horrible job of voicing the amp models included and produces a thin trebling sound that no degree of tweaking overcomes. The built-in effects don't help as they are noisy and heavy-handed (although chorus works OK). Combine all of that with a byzantine system for accessing the provided presets (one must learn to differentiate between "green" and "yellow-green" button colors, which to all appearances both look green) and for storing and accessing user-determined settings. The amp interface feels like something somebody cooked up in their garage. In sum, this amp tries to do too much and does that with low-quality components. There are better choices out there -- yep, keep looking.

So many great, warm sounds! Still one of my favorite amps. Loud enough for small gigs as well as home recording. Great practice amp because of all the voicings and effects. Bias shaping.

Got the in the green a while back. Took a while to get it figured out and dialed in, but with a little time and effort it's ok. I don't use the software and app.. I do strongly recommend getting the footboard you go with it. The hybrid style is versatile and adds lots of colors. It's loud enough for small venues and light enough to carry easily. Nice addition as a small amp to your amp arsenal.
