MODX+ Overview

Yamaha's Tech Talk: Introducing MODX+

Description
The Yamaha MODX7+ 76-key synthesizer delivers cutting-edge sound technology in a compact and versatile format, making it a standout choice for keyboardists seeking professional-grade performance. Combining Yamaha's renowned AMW2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) and FM-X synthesis engines, this model creates stunning emulative acoustic sounds alongside highly programmable synthesized tones. With 128 notes of polyphony for each engine, players can craft intricate, layered soundscapes without limitations. Its 76-note semi-weighted, synth-action keybed offers excellent responsiveness, accommodating both expressive solos and rhythmic passages. Designed for live performers and studio creators alike, the MODX7+ provides the tools to push sonic boundaries while maintaining exceptional playability.
Dual Synthesis Engines for Sonic Exploration
The MODX7+ synthesizer features Yamaha's AMW2 and FM-X synthesis engines, creating an expansive sound palette for any creative endeavor. The AMW2 engine compresses large amounts of data without sacrificing sound quality, producing lifelike acoustic instruments, drums and textures. Complementing this is the FM-X engine, capable of generating harmonically rich and dynamic sounds, from classic FM tones to innovative electronic textures. Together, these engines enable musicians to design sounds ranging from traditional orchestral instruments to futuristic synth layers, ensuring every performance is both dynamic and inspiring.
Motion Control Technology for Dynamic Soundscapes
This model introduces Yamaha's Motion Control technology, designed to elevate sound manipulation and performance expressivity. The Super Knob allows simultaneous control of up to 128 parameters, providing real-time modulation over mix functions, filters, LFOs and more. Motion Sequences offer tempo-synchronized, customizable control sequences that can alter nearly any synthesizer parameter. These tools enable players to add rhythmic and dynamic complexity to their sounds, fostering a personalized and immersive performance experience. Whether shaping ambient textures or driving pulsating grooves, Motion Control technology ensures unparalleled creative flexibility.
Compact Design With Road-Ready Build
The MODX7+ synthesizer is crafted with portability in mind, offering a modern design that is significantly lighter than comparable keyboards. Its semi-weighted keybed provides excellent playability while maintaining a slim profile suited for travel. The streamlined chassis simplifies load-ins and setups, making it ideal for gigging musicians who need reliability without bulk. Despite its lightweight construction, this instrument retains the power and durability demanded by professional players. The portable design ensures both ease of transport and road-ready resilience for consistent performance.
A Synthesizer for Players Seeking Advanced Sound Design
The Yamaha MODX7+ is perfect for musicians looking to explore complex sound design in a portable format. Its dual synthesis engines, Motion Control technology and lightweight build make it an excellent choice for performers and studio creators alike. Whether you're crafting intricate arrangements or delivering dynamic live performances, this synthesizer offers the tools and responsiveness needed to inspire your next musical breakthrough.

Super Keyboard for Live Shows or Recording Projects
This keyboard is simply amazing. I got this when I replaced some older gear that was severely outdated. There is only one major drawback I have on this 76 key version. They key action is quite bad. I sacrificed an older Roland RD-200 that had amazing key action for this which is very spongy. It really hinders my piano playing style when doing piano as the keys just don't move the way you expect them. As a result it causes me to hit wrong notes a lot. Aside from that, it is a strong synth. The flexibility to layer and split the keyboard into multiple sounds is a sheer delight. The user interface is very good. It is a good size and the lighting is also very good. It has a good many features that I don't use but , I anticipate using some of them later. I found it complicated in some ways. I did not find it easy in trying to reproduce vintage synth sounds. It has a lot of sounds already but the edit feature of each of the performances and the multiple element sounds within each performance is a little complex. Trying to get to the VCOs and VCFs is a little tricky. The other thing that is very hard to figure out is sequencing. It does not have a sequencer but you can record parts and play them back in different keys and different speeds, this is a very useful feature but I only found one video explaining it. I wish there was more instruction on how to use the recording functions. The midi zones are also very versatile and helpful. I use the MODX to run 2 other midi keyboards in a chain. This is flexible for that because you can send multiple midi channel signals from the multiple performance sounds. Its a little complicated but its worth it once you learn it. This allows you to layer sounds with the other keyboards One other thing I found very frustrating was that when loading wave files it shows an error message if you don't use a 16bit file. And the error message does not indicate this. I had to look around for days online to figure this out. This was bad design.

Not for gigging
I've owned lots of Yamaha gear with no issues. This keyboard is built like a low end Casio. Flimsy and the action is horrible. It came with a missing knob. Even with the knob, this would have been returned. It's just bad. I'll be looking for another board as my 2nd. Boo Yamaha

The sounds are outstanding, still new to this keyboard but I'm always finding something new. The weight of this board is making it easier to keep playing into the future(not spring chicken). If you're looking to upgrade, the Modx+ might just be what you're wanting.

From the moment I played one at a local music store, I fell in love with the MODX+ platform of keyboards. Having been a longtime Yamaha keyboard owner they have once again captured the sounds and features that are desirable and staples of the music industry. The touch screen and Super Knob are the icing on the cake with endless possibilities. I had been watching this keyboard for a long time and finally purchased one to include as the main focal point of my custom built home studio workstation. I built my workstation around the MODX7+ so it fit perfectly and sounds amazing! Plus you get all of the latest technology and exquisite sounds at a very affordable price. I love my Yamaha!

I purchased the keyboard after shoulder surgery as I needed a lighter keyboard than my Yamaha MO8. I love the sounds and the downloadable libraries. The performances are well programmed and easy to play as solo performer (like band in a box). The menus are easy to traverse, once you learn where to go. YouTube had a number of instructional videos that were helpful. The keyboard is listed as "semi-weighted" but it has an "organ touch". It is a slight sacrifice for the total weight of 15 pounds. The "Jazz Voices" sample is really fun!

Decided to start playing music again with a few old band mates, but being in my mid 60's and not having used keyboards in over 30 years, it's definitely a learning curve for me. That said, the quantity and quality of sounds are great, and once I started watching some tutorials online, I'm slowing getting a better feel of basic settings for live performance. The menu is deep with many steps to get the final product I need, such as layers, splits, effects, pitch changes, but once it's done the time involved is well worth it. It's great having all my mostly used patches along with each song's settings in the live set list without having to go into performance mode to search for a sound. Very easy to tweak sounds on the fly with sliders, equalizer, attacks delays release, etc. Unless I haven't found it yet, and I'll keep looking, I would've liked to have an effects setting on the fly also. While realizing this is a basically a Montage "lite" without as many features, I'd much rather spend under 2K than over 4K, although a better quality heavier duty housing would've been nice. I am concerned about the thin flimsy plastic case getting damaged while transporting, and I also wish Yamaha would've used a higher quality semi weighted keybed. I understand wanting to keep the cost down while making a profit, but these two negatives are major to me. I would've definitely paid a little more money for upgrades in these areas. Overall, I'm glad I own it and extremely happy with this keyboard.

Is weighted keyboard the same as semi weighted seen elsewhere? For the Modx7 plus?
No, probably not the same. . I don't know what your reference is. Everyone wants to imitate the weighted keys of an acoustic piano. Every manufacturer has there own way of doing it. This will have a 'stiffer' feel than a regular synth. A synth typically has no weight at all, much like an organ.submitted3 years ago

What kind of rebate are you offering, and does Yamaha still offer the sustain pedal and (I forgot what) something else if bought this year? Thanks, I'm very interested. I've been playing an EX5 since I bought it new. Ready for a change.
