Yamaha

collapse expand iconDescription

Yamaha reface keyboards are designed around the practical needs of contemporary musicians. The name of the series, "reface" is a conflation of the idea of reimagining and the legacy of Yamaha's many groundbreaking keyboard instrument interfaces. Among the innovations that it harkens back to are the legendary CP80, Yamaha Combo Organ and CS5 keyboards. This is the reface DX, which has as one of its chief orientations the bell pianos and broad digital synth library from the DX7.

The reface series is small. Incredibly small. But unlike miniature keyboard instruments of the past, the reface touch is satisfying and expressive, and the sound is nothing short of spectacular. The reface family of keyboards features built-in speakers and is battery operable so you can create on the go. An AUX line in allows you to play along with MP3 players or whatever other audio device you wish to use. Add MIDI and USB connectivity, and the reface's capacity to interface with external devices is vast.

Reface DX goes retro '80s to cutting-edge modern at the flick of a switch, literally. Capacitive multi-touch control puts powerful FM synthesis under your fingertips. Quickly edit, store and recall 32 of your favorite Voices with the onboard memory. Add final polish to your sound using the two onboard multi-effects. Got a quick idea for a song or just want to jam? The onboard Looper records your playing complete with sound-on-sound-style overdubs. You can even change or edit Voices while playing back the Looper—a great way to fine-tune your custom Voices.

For sound designers and keyboardists needing classic '80s to cutting-edge EDM FM sound, reface DX is a mini-key FM synthesizer based on the legendary DX7, featuring modern four-operator FM synthesis and dual effects processors. The reface DX offers unique and complex synth sound that's only possible from Yamaha.

WebMIDI and the reface Keyboard

Yamaha is one of the first to offer a way to use WebMIDI, which connects MIDI devices to the internet, allowing musical instruments to play online synthesizers, as well as save or share sounds. reface mobile mini keyboards can use WebMIDI to songs to YouTube (video) and SoundCloud (audio).

BROWSE shows all available sounds (currently thousands), and you can refine your searches using tags. Once you find a sound you like, click on it and hit SYNC. This will send the sound to your connected reface and show them you to move the controls on your keyboard to recreate the sound. How cool is that?

  • Very Pleased I Bought It

I obsessively watched videos and read comments about this keyboard before buying it, and tried out a few FM synth iOS apps first to see if that would be enough for me. FM has a reputation for being hard to get the hang of, but the interface of this does make it easier, even compared to the touch screen on my iPad. I did need to learn the fundamentals from videos, but have already made half a dozen of my own presets after only a week or so. The build quality is fantastic and much less like a toy than I was expecting. While storing patches online is a bit cumbersome, there are still plenty of onboard presets for me to keep favorite sounds for a project and still have access to the others I have designed or found. Even with only four operators, I thoroughly enjoy it for designing sounds, which I enjoy more than sifting through countless pages of DX7 presets. I haven't used a lot of mini keys before, and a lot of reviews commented on how these were very comfortable for mini keys, and I have no issue with them even switching between them an full size keys.

There wasn't enough of low end for the music I make and when I came across the reface DX I was hooked! It was basically what my music needed. I'm also making plans to purchase the reface CS as well.

I was searching for a modular or compact size polyphonic synth to use for recording and eventually settled on the Yamaha DX Reface. Most of the smaller synths in this price range are monophonic (one note at a time) and I want the ability to play chords as well as bass lines. I immediately found this synth to be very intuitive in its controls, contrary to what many reviews say about the DX7 being complicated. Watching a few tutorial videos beforehand definitely helped in understanding the parameters, the manual doesn't really tell you much. There are basically four operators or voices that have controls for oscillator shape, level and frequency/tuning, and in edit mode, you have controls for filter and LFO on all four voices individually. I like that the four voices essentially start as a sine wave at the center point and can be blended with a saw or square wave. It's more about adding/blending the wave forms to make subtle changes rather than simply having two wave forms which tends to make more dramatic changes to the sound with every subsequent adjustment. Yes, it is small, but I'm using a Korg X50 as a controller via MIDI, which also has arpeggiator presets to trigger the DX. The other features I like is velocity sensitivity and onboard effects. You can have two effects at a time and are very useful, particularly chorus for pads for thickening the sound. I'd definitely recommend this synth, and at the price it can't be beat for everything it can do.

Can I play the Yamaha reface DX Mobile Mini Keyboard without plugging it into anything? Looking for a good high quality keyboard to play while I'm traveling. I have a full sized keyboard at home, looking for exactly that, except smaller, preferably 37 keys. If I do have to plug it in, I have a Mac laptop computer, but it doesn't have a usb or aux plug in, as it is a new model, which is extremely inconvenient. I'd need specific adapters to plug it in. I would prefer not having to do that extra step, and would just like a nice, simple, 37 key keyboard that I can play as is. Thank you!
