Passive and Active Speakers

What is the difference between passive speakers and active speakers?

The difference is simple. A passive speaker consists of just the speaker (or speakers) and the speaker cabinet (along with the necessary wiring). A passive speaker requires an external power amp to drive the speaker.

An active speaker has the power amp built into the speaker cabinet, so it does not require an external power amp. However, it does require a power outlet.
