Total Harmonic Distortion

I've seen the term "Total Harmonic Distortion" among the specifications on my amp. What does it mean?

The output of an amplifier is an amplified version of the input signal PLUS any distortion created by the amp itself. All amplifiers and signal processors add some level of distortion to the signal. This is known as "Total Harmonic Distortion" (or THD). The total harmonic distortion is measured as the ratio of the level of a fundamental frequency to the level of all harmonics introduced by the amplifier, observed at the output of the system. It is expressed as a percentage. Obviously, an amplifier with a lower THD offers cleaner sound.
