What are speaker crossovers?

What are speaker crossovers?

Single speakers don't have a flat frequency response over the entire range of audible frequencies. That's why most cabs contain more than one speaker. The biggest speaker is the woofer. It's for the low frequencies. The smallest, the tweeter, is designed to project high frequencies. The third speaker is for mid-range. Speaker cabinets have a crossover built in to prevent these speakers from overloading.

A speaker crossover is a filter system that takes the incoming audio signal and splits it into chunks that each speaker can handle. If you have a woofer and tweeter, then the crossover has a lowpass and highpass filter. A third bandpass filter handles the mid-range frequencies.
