It is very easy to capture the highs of a kit, but in a live setting, the mids or lows can be a challenge. The lower frequencies are easily lost in the ambiance on stage. A drum shield will trap the frequencies to give you more control over the kit. Even a mediocre mic can sound phenomenal behind a drum shield. The drum shield doesn't just help behind the kit. It can also dramatically cut your cymbal noise on stage. It's very easy for a vocal mic to turn into another overhead.
