D'Adddario Accessories: Auto Trim Tuning Machines

D'Addario

collapse expand iconDescription

The Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines automatically cut off excess string while you tune up your guitar. An individual string clamp holds the string tightly in the tuner, so there's no need for multiple wraps around the tuning post. A precision 18:1 gear ratio provides smooth, exact tuning, while virtually eliminating backlash and slippage.

The rugged, die-cast outer casing houses precision 18:1 bevel and worm gears, a string clamp, and a hardened-steel wire cutter. Restringing has never been easier: simply insert the string, tighten the clamp, and tune up. The Auto-Trim Tuning Machine does the rest.

Very Nice

I love these things! I was a little skeptical based on some of the other reviews, but I must say I am more than pleasantly surprised. I fully expect designs similar to this will become the standard in the future. I decided to put them on my Martin OMC-1E. They didn't fit the stock holes on that guitar, so I had to do a slight modification using a Dremel sanding bit to make the holes a uniform diameter, but that will surely vary from guitar to guitar. Stringing the guitar with these babies installed is a cinch, but the included instructions leave a few things lacking. To clear up that and some of the issues stated in previous reviews, these are the steps I use. I'm yet to have any issues using this technique. 1.) Insert the strings in the bridge and insert the bridge pins. 2.) Tug each string toward the nut to make sure they are seated snug in the bridge with no slippage. 3.) Turn all of the machines so that the side with the silver metal bump is facing the neck. 4.) For each of the strings, insert the string into it's assigned tuning peg through the side with the metal bump. The direction is important. Pull the string all the way through until it is straightened. You don't have to leave slack like you do on normal tuning machines. 5.) IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO UNDER-TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER KNOB. Tighten the string holder knob to lock the string in place. Tighten it as tight as you can with your fingers and pull the string back toward the bridge to test for any slippage. I am able to get it tight enough with my fingers, but as a previous poster said, you might also consider using pliers to give yourself a bit more leverage. You don't have to kill it, but you do need to make them nice and snug so the string cannot slip out. 6.) Turn the tuning knob to start tuning the string. Once it reaches the cutting edge the string will be cut very easily. 7.) Once the string is cut, TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER SCREW AGAIN! Some of the resistance is released once the cut happens and you'll be able to tighten it a little bit more. I believe this is probably the root of the problems others have had with string slippage. 8.) After you have all of the strings in and cut, tune all of the strings up to full tension. After you've done it once you will be able to change all of your strings in a couple of minutes.

Nope... they get out tune easily...

They look good on the guitar. Guitar center techs installed them and they had to make bigger holes on my neck. I have a Gibson tribute guitar. The locking tuners don't really hold the guitar in tune at all.. they do every once n while but for the most part they get out of tune... I would give it back if I could but it's too late. I have to get a new guitar now lol but anyways... think about it. Maybe yours will be better than mine.. but I wouldn't recommend it.

I can't believe anyone would give less than 5/5 stars on these tuners! They are absolutely the best tuners I've ever used. People who say they don't work are stoned and unlock them to release the string or something. These are a no brainer. Get them!

I contacted D'Addario about putting these on a Jackson 7 string and they said if I send them the order confirmation they'd send me the 7th tuning machine for free and I had it in about a week.

these auto trim your strings. they then allow your strings to fall out of tune every 6 seconds. worst product i have ever purchased for music. completely ruined my sg. will be putting factory machine heads back on and shooting at these with my shotgun.

  • Excellent for a while until it implodes.

Worked awesome for around 2 years and then literally fell apart one by one. I wasn't over tightening, or anything. Irreparable, the locking mechanism got loose and very quickly fell out of it along with gears. Not a happy camper, but I guess that's what you get with cheaper tuners. Other than that, easy install of course, stayed in tune pretty well, and worked as you would like them, minus the eventual implosion. 🤷‍♂

  • It's a must, ever use Wire Cutters?

How about this. Use Wire Cutters instead. Just like everybody else. Wire Cutters? What are they for? The Electrician and Electronics work for cutting COPPER wire. Soft wire at that. What a String. Hard Steel, like fencing. So what's to use. Fence Cutters or String Cutters. They are made to cut HARD wire, even strings, but no one uses them. Why? They haven't figured it out. So you got them for your regular tuners so you can restring. You tell them about your String Cutter's, Next thing you know, you can't find them. Solution, use these tuning keys. They are less likely to disappear then those, where did the go, String Cutters. O'boy.

I already had Fence Cutters, when I was a kid, writing songs & recording. They worked. Wire Cutter do not work, they are for cutting Copper Wire. They don't use copper wire to make those strings. Ergo, Copper Wire Cutters get trashed when you use them for cutting strings. Get Fence Cutters if you line on the Farm or nearby like I did, or as I do now, get String Cutters from Musicians Friends, like I have, both ways, Tuner Keys that trim the String & I also have String Cutters. I need to mount new tuners any way, according to me, either the feel or the look. They have got to set the string & keep the set. One stretch, the first night, then just some touch ups. Three weeks and restring, the highs will start to fade if you don't. That's what I did when I was recording. Heart by Bill Berne '64, Fleet by Bill Berne '64, Creedence by JT Berne '64, Man from Atlantis by Bill Berne '64, just some of what I did, in that order..

will it work with the ESP LTD 256?

will it work with the ESP LTD 256?

The D'Addario Auto-Trim Tuning Machines (3 per side) can potentially work with the ESP LTD EC-256, but there are a few things to check to make sure they’re compatible: 1. Headstock Layout (✓ Yes) The EC-256 has a 3+3 headstock configuration, which matches the D'Addario 3-per-side tuner set. 2. Tuner Hole Size The D'Addario Auto-Trims require a 10mm (13/32") tuner hole diameter. The ESP LTD EC-256 stock tuners (ESP-branded) are generally also 10mm, but it's worth confirming by measuring one of your tuner holes or checking ESP's specs. 3. Mounting Style D'Addario tuners use a single-pin mounting system (one alignment pin on the back). The ESP stock tuners may use screws for mounting instead of pins. If that's the case: You might need to drill a small hole for the alignment pin. Or use adapter bushings or sleeves (if there's a mismatch in hole size). And you may have visible old screw holes unless filled or covered. Will fit if: The tuner holes are 10mm. You're okay modifying or aligning for the single pin. May require minor mods like: Drilling a pin hole for each tuner. Filling or ignoring the old screw holes.

In a case like this we recommend having a qualified guitar tech look at the guitar to assure proper screw hole alignment and post width.

Would these locking tuners work on a LTD Viper 400 Baritone? I see the screw hole is not in the same position as the current grover tuner machines that came on the guitar.
