How To Choose A Bass Drum Head

EVANS

collapse expand iconDescription

Brought to you by Evans, the EQ4 Batter Clear 24" drum head delivers finely tuned tone for discerning drummers. Featuring an internal overtone control ring and removable muffle ring, this 10mil single-ply drum head allows for subtle tone shaping and attenuation of unwanted overtones. The control ring is sized proportionally for each drum size, providing balanced tone across your kit. For live performance or recording, the EQ4 Batter Clear gives you complete control over your drum's tone.

Internal Control Ring Tailors Tone

At the heart of the EQ4 Batter Clear's nuanced sound is its fixed internal overtone control ring. Placed just under the playing surface, the ring helps reduce excess overtones for a focused tone. The control ring's diameter varies based on drum size, keeping tone balanced whether on a rack tom, floor tom, or bass drum. With the ring in place, drummers can achieve a range of sounds from wide open to tightly controlled with a simple tuning adjustment.

Removable Muffle Ring Adds Dampening

For further tone control, Evans includes a removable muffle ring with the EQ4 Batter Clear. Adding the ring provides additional dampening to reduce ring and overtones. With the muffle ring installed, drummers can achieve a "muffled" studio sound or a tight, controlled tone for live playing. For more open tones, the muffle ring can simply be removed. The EQ4 Batter Clear offers flexibility for any musical situation.

Durably Crafted for Reliable Performance

As with all Evans drum heads, the EQ4 Batter Clear is designed and manufactured in the USA to exacting quality standards. The 10mil film provides durability and consistency, holding up to the hardest-hitting drummers. Evans is known for constant innovation, and the EQ4 Batter Clear lives up to their reputation. For drummers wanting complete control and nuanced tone, the EQ4 Batter Clear is an ideal choice.

I've recently purchased a new drum set that came with EQ 4 heads. The toms sound pretty good but my 22" kick drum leaves me wanting something different. It's really more a matter of taste, and I would describe the sound of this kick drum head as something that sounds more like "blap". I keep wanting to tighten this (already too tight) head because it sounds un-tuned, no matter how tight I make it. For me, the perfect kick drum sound is something between a resonant boom and a thud... never, ever "blap". I'll be heading back to GC for a Powerstroke 3, so if you're interested in an almost new kick batter head that goes blap, I can hook you up.

As a drumset instructor and fanatic, I am extremely picky about all my drumheads. I will begin by saying that I use both Remo and Evans heads, and both companies are in my opinion superior to any other. However, Evans technology is newer, and I find their heads are more "modern". I have used EQ2's and EQ3's, both with very satisfactory results. I thought I'd give the EQ4 a try when GC put it on sale. It's currently on a mapex, all-maple 22" Saturn series kit and sounds great... MUCH better than the Remo Pins I had before. The bass drum is overall louder and boomier and is quite capable of delivering a satisfying "punch" if you put on the right beater. The overtone control ring does it's job quite well. You don't have as much flexibility as the EQ3 where you can change out or add a second overtone ring, but I didn't like the extra dampening anyway so if you share my opinion you can save yourself some money with the EQ4. Overall, I would say it's a great buy. Evans is a great company and I can't wait to see what they come out with next.

I have been playing drums for 16 years and have tried many different drum heads. I am currently using a Pearl Masters birch 18"x22" bass drum with the Evans EQ4 bass drum head. This head has a huge sound. The attack is very pronounced and focused while having a low end thud behind it but overall sounds very controlled and deep. It gives my bass drum a huge sound and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a big sound out of their bass drum. I am completely satisfied with this head.
