D'Addario Core: How to Change and Tune a Tom Drumhead

EVANS

collapse expand iconDescription

Your tom has got to be big and fat, and the Hydraulic heads from EVANS deliver. The Hydraulic Black features two black-finished plies filled with a layer of oil, which acts as a muffler to increase your attack without messing up the feel of the head. The attack is very solid with a quick, controlled sustain that rules for rock, live or in the studio.

Great sound!

I put these heads on an old Mark II drum set to use as a practice set. Mark II drums are made for children to play and are below entry-level drums. I had to use the Mark II for an audition, and the guys told me they loved the sound of my drums. It was the heads that made the sound, not the drums. These are great. If you are a metal or rock drummer who always plays at the same dynamic - loud - these are not for you. If you are looking for a head with great response and decay and allows your stick work to shine while you change dynamic levels at will, these heads are for you. They are very musical and other musicians notice the difference.

Not for floor tom.

Wanted a deep bass sound for this 18" DW concept Tom. I believe the hydro was just too thick. Was hoping for a good low end response, but it was flat.

I recently purchased a hardly used set of Pearl Forum Drums. Replaced the 10" tom with Evans Hydralic head. I use Evans on all my drums. They tune perfect and sound great.

I couldn't be more disappointed, after spending hours trying to get a good sound from these heads I have given up. They sound like the are completely covered in duct tape.

I knew I needed a two-ply head in black. I emailed customer service at Aquarian, Evans and Remo. Aquarian never bothered to get back to me. Evans and Remo did. What I learned from my research, was that ALL of the Remo two-ply heads that came in black, were manufactured with the black ply on top, clear ply on the bottom, whereas ALL of the Evans two-ply heads that came in black, were manufactured with with the clear ply on top, black ply on the bottom. Why is this important? Just this: many end-users' feedback strongly advised against using drum heads with the black ply on top. Reason being as the drum head naturally wears out, the black finish will transfer over onto the sticks, then over to the snare drum batter head and cymbals. If you are ever required to employ brushes on the snare drum, maintaining a pristine white batter coated surface may be important to you. Additionally, since both sheet bronze and cast style cymbals are actually made up of dozens of tiny grooves, you probably don't want this black finish clogging your cymbal grooves. Just a thought.
