The Meinl African Talking Drum is carved into an hourglass shape from a solid piece of Mahogany wood, and decorated with a carved motif. Two hand-selected goatskin heads are tuned with high-quality nylon rope. Traditionally, the talking drum is played beneath one arm, and held against the ribcage. The drum is then squeezed to "bend" the pitch while the other hand employs a curved striker.

    This is a nice replica of a West African talking drum. I have three others that use original materials, thin-skinned leather drum heads and leather side chords. They are more authentic but I worry about them disintegrating. The one I purchased in Liberia in 1967 has done that, and all that is left is the wood core.

    I purchased this drum for my World Drums Unit at my school where I teach instruments from around the world! It is an excellent addition to my personal collection that I can share with my students as we play the different drums using different rhythms, dynamics, and tempo! They are made very durable and I like the mahogany wood mallet. I also like the way it is made to look very "African" with the texture of the wood and colors. My students have really enjoyed getting a chance to play them as I did purchase two. I recommend this drum for anyone who works with students in the Elementary to College level even! I might purchase a couple of small size ones later....medium size is a little difficult for the lower grades (1-3) to wrap their arm around it and squeeze. You can also go to youtube.com and find free "African Talking Drum Lessons" to get you started!

    Mallet / beater? I've only played talking drums with the traditional curved beater, aka mallet. I don't see that with the Meinl options, nor do I see an option to buy one separately. So ... where do people get that? Does it come with the Meinl talking drum, but is just not listed?

    You go off of your height, or your desired sound. If you need something a bit lower in pitch that as a more of a booming type quality to it, go with the large, otherwise you can stick with the medium.
