Remo Dave Weckl Adjustable Bass Drum Muffling System 20 in.

I use the Dave Weckl adjustable bass drum muffling system in conjuntion with a single-ply coated batter head (no gasket) and an Aquarian regulator on the resonant side. It doesn't choke the head off. The sound seems to offer just the right frequencies and eliminates any of the "basketball bouncing" sounds indicative of gasket heads sometimes. I like that it can be easily removed and adjusted. The velcro-attached bendable clips are far superior to taping something to the head. I like that is customizable in terms of pressure against the head. While it seems pricey, it is all I will ever really need and will be used for every drum head change.

I'm one of those who don't like the idea of putting things in my bass drum. I adopt the philosophy that you shouldn't disrupt the shells resonance & you should allow the shell to resonate as freely as possible. I am open minded to muffling, though I think it should be done as sparingly as your willing to tolerate. I tried a clear Remo Powerstroke 3 on my bass drum batter & a regular clear Remo Ambassador on the resonant. Actually, I originally went to order a coated Ambassador for the resonant - but I accidentally ordered a clear version. Either way, it worked out. Although I think a coated resonant would be a little warmer. Then I put a felt strip on the batter - but soon found it to alter the feel of the kick. So I took the felt strip off the batter. The problem was - although I liked the feel of the batter without the felt strip, the head still needed something to slow down its vibration. So I started to look around for something that would stabilize the batters resonance slightly without disrupting too much of the shells acoustics. The Dave Weckl muffler was perfect. I put it on & it did exactly what I was after. I then put the felt strip on the Remo Ambassador head I was using on the resonant side. It worked out perfect. The combination makes the drum sound like a perfect classic sounding bass drum. The only thing I would change is I wish I could have ordered the smallest version - but I couldn't find it at the time. When I first found this product - to me it looked like you had to drill holes in your bass drum to fasten it. I was wrong. It's fastened with velcro strips that work very well. It might also be important to note that even though the different size muffles are labeled 18, 20 or 22+, the size really has nothing to do with whether it will fit your drum or not. The different sizes are really only good for what degree you wish to muffle your drum. For example, I purchased the 20" size version - but I own a 22" bass drum. It still works fine - and in-fact I'm going to go ahead & buy the smallest version (18") in order to muffle my bass drum the least. Great product! I definitely, definitely recommend it!!!
