Decent guitar for the size, intent for use, and price.

I bought this for my 7 year old granddaughter. She likes to pluck on my guitars, so I picked this up for her to try. She is beginning to learn piano--I don't want this guitar to be a distraction from that process, but it's there when she wants to try. I chose to buy it now rather than wait, as costs go up over time. I chose the Mini JM (in Daphne Blue) over the Mini Strat because I hope the offset body will be a comfortable learning guitar. (I have 2 offsets which I enjoy playing.) The guitar was fine right from the box. It tuned up easily but slipped out of tune eventually. (I will eventually get it set up professionally.) The craftsmanship is fine: Body is nicely contoured on back, neck is smooth, machines turn easily, position switch, volume and tone knob all work fine. Some (not all) fret ends are rough. It's not a high end instrument, but it is NOT a toy. I gave it 4 stars for being a good kids beginner instrument, or possibly a travel/practice instrument for others. It is what it is.

not like my other 2015 Squire Mini

i already had a mini strat for my son from 2015, that one stays in tune and has a good tone. even as an adult i enjoy playing that one. this one, not that he might notice but i sure will if he wants to play with me. as "dad" with the good ears im already on tuning duty, so this is a lot of work (or cringing). the tuners look nicer than 2015s but are not as good obviously. i also think where the nut is set relative to the 1st-3rd frets are just not intonated. barre chords are intonated but open chords, yuck. adjusted intonation overall but no help for open chords. to top it off, probably the biggest disappointment is that frets are not evenly pressed. some of them hang so high up the high e gets caught. had to hammer them in so string wouldnt get caught but it still just looks bad. and also its not a one piece maple neck like a tele, the fretboard is glued on. i only noticed because there is a terrible amount of glue left like it was attempted to be buffed out but you can still see it. perhaps all the overgluing is why the frets wont press in fully on the fretboard. overall just not anything that shouldve left the factory but i already gave it as a christmas gift, hoping my 6 year old doesnt notice and enjoys it anyway, and plays the strat from 2015 when playing with me :D. if youre a parent and not a musician maybe youre unlikely to notice these issues if youre kid doesnt. if you are a musician or can pick out bad intonation like a sore thumb, might wanna at least unbox and inspect before gifting only to have to return it. if this was a guitar for me, i dont care how cheap, i would be returning/exchanging. also unlike the 2015 model, its got tiny strap posts. no idea why, theres no such thing as "tiny holed mini straps"...

I bought my dream guitar - a Mystic Surf Green American Pro II Jazzmaster. I had a bunch of rewards credits from that purchase, so I bought a matching mini version for my kids to eventually learn on. The overall build quality feels great for its price point. I came in with very low expectations, and this far exceeded it. It holds a tune very well and the switches and knobs feel great. My biggest gripe is the pickups. I don't know if the pickups themselves or a byproduct of the short scale length, but the pickups sounded super woolly. I tried lowering them until they bottomed out, but that still wasn't enough. I put thicker strings on and that made a big difference, but the nut needs filed to fit them now. The tone still sounds off and the sustain isn't great. It's like the pickups are still pulling on the strings even though they're not high. The tiny strap buttons are useless. How do you mess up strap buttons? When you shrink a guitar, you don't have to shrink the buttons. Straps do no fit on it. I'm ordering a set of strap blocks which should keep them in place. If those fail, I'll swap them out for normal strap buttons. As a starter guitar that's more or less a matching wall decoration for my other guitar, I'm fine with it. It's fun to mess around with, and the build quality is surprisingly good. It's a cool novelty because it's a matching guitar, but if I had to buy a legit short scale to have a kid learn on, I'd get a Squier Mustang instead.

I'd have to say. I'm very impressed by the Indonesian made instruments. Yeah you have to to little tweaks here and there lightly with a file, sandpaper, or dremel. But for the money I think it some great bang for TV he buck. I've got 2 of them in the house. They are great for all types of music. I play heavy music with on of these.

I am 5'4" and this little guitar is so cool and easy to play! I have a Les Paul that is heavy and cumbersome, and this guitar sounds pretty great and it light and so dang easy to shred on. I want Squier to make more mini guitars so that I can collect them all. Currently, they offer the mini jazzmaster, mini strat, and mini telecaster.

  • Not bad, but intonation is an issue

Bought this as a birthday gift for 14 year old who wants to learn to play. She is small so the 3/4 size was the attraction here. I own a Squire Classic Vibe Tele so I felt the quality would be reasonable for an entry level guitar. Right out of the box, the guitar was nowhere in tune and the strings did not stay at pitch. Other aspects were pretty good. The neck was straight, fret sprout was minimal and all electronics worked correctly. Had a guitar builder friend give it the once over. He was not able to intonate the short scale perfectly but he got it to 8 out of 10. We changed the strings to 10's which helped it to stay in pitch. Doing that he recut the nut and lubricated it. Also put a little more bow in the neck to alleviate minor buzzing. Finally, he adjusted the saddles accordingly. Given that this is intended for a young beginning guitarist. I think it is okay. But keep in mind, that this work probably would have cost me $50 with a repairman.

It's a 22,.5" scale. A standard size guitar is 25.5". Many adults play mini's. Go ahead and play
