If you have 300 dollars to spend on a guitar this is it. If you have 500 dollars this is it. If you have 700 this is still it. I have no idea how Yamaha makes a guitar this good at this price. I did a lot of shopping and played a lot of guitars. I could have saved myself a lot of time by trying this first. As you can see I have an old friend that shares the same family tree. This guitar has been with me for 6 months now and may be the last acoustic guitar I own. The old one has over a 30 year history with me. If it could talk......what am I saying! It can do better than that. It can sing and it tells my life story

Not too happy!

It is not an easy guitar to play at all. It just is not…!!! Mind you that this guitar is a low action guitar and it still is not an easy guitar to play! Second, as you're moving up the fretboard, (say!) past the 7th fret, you have to press down hard on the strings for your dear life to get the notes ring out properly. If you're pressing down on the mid point on the fret, not as near to the "metal" fret as possible, FORGET IT!!!, the sound will be either dull or muffled or worse, "dead". Can you say, "The courtesy of Yahama"!? Third, I also noticed that the quality of the sound coming out of the notes diminishes as you move up the fretboard. As a newbie, you will be impressed, trying out the guitar when playing notes down the fretboard (say!) between 1st and the 7th fret. I find it "inconsistent"! Overall, it is NOT an easy guitar to play for a beginner. If I had to do it all over again, knowing that playing guitar is not just a passing fad for me, I would have gladly spent a bit more money and gotten a Taylor with much much better "playability". Maybe there is something, not quite right with my FG830. Maybe I should take it to a guitar luthier to get it looked at.

    This guitar is lighter than my 40 yr old Fender dreadnought, so my 1st impression was "cheap", but that's deceptive. This looks & sounds very nice - better than the old Fender. As with other reviewers, I thought the action was a little high; I went for the mid-priced setup and now it plays great. I had bought & returned 4 others before getting to this one. 2 were acoustic-electrics with the body cutout to let you reach a few frets higher. I miss that on this one, but the cutout seems to adversely affect the resonance (if that's the right term), so that they just didn't have the volume I was looking for. This one does. I'd buy it again. Just bought a new sound-hole pickup for recording.

    This guitar sounds terrific - plenty of base and such clear tone. I got one thinking it'd be a good practice guitar, well it is and it's also so much more. I installed at L.R. Baggs hifi preamp in it making this guitar sounds terrific much more! Don't get the lower end Martin's this Yamaha will blow them away. I did swap up the pick guard for something similar to the vintages FG300.

    Borderline best guitar for the money. A must for a beginner who wants to "stick with it". Don't be thrown off by the only negative review, he obviously has 0 finger dexterity. I'm still a "beginner" and this guitar feels great.
